How to install Head Unit in BMW X5

Postby xtrons » Mon Dec 04, 2023 12:12 pm

Car installed in: BMW X5 30D 2011
Unit that will fit: QEB12X5CI, QPB10X5CI, QPB12X5CI, QSB12X5CI, QEB12X5CC, QPB10X5CC, QPB12X5CC, QSB12X5CC, QEB12X5NB

The installation of the screen is fairly simple, and isnt more complicated than the diagram below:

1) Start with taking the airvents out. These should be attached by clip, so use some plastic pry tool to pry it out:

There will be few cables attached in the back of this panel, unplug these cables, and set them aside

2) Take the OEM screen out. It will be held by 2 screws on the bottom:

Unplug the pink LVSD cable, and power cable. The power cable of OEM screen will not be used further.

4) Once Climate control panel is out, you will have access to the OEM radio, which is held by 4 screws. Take them out, and pull the OEM radio out:

5) There are 2 things that you have to unplug, the quadlock power socket, and blue GPS antenna (if you plan to retain the orignal bmw antenna):

6) Now, You need to take the power cable that came with Xtrons screen, and plug it in between the OEM quadlock, and OEM radio (Blue marks OEM power plug, Red marks Xtrons power plug. Just like this:

7) Now, you need to take the optical cable out of your OEM power cable, and plug it into same spot but on the Xtrons power cable:

8) (optional) OEM gps antenna can be retained, you just gonna need an extension cable (FZMF or similar). Simply plug one end to the original gps connector (blue), and the other end to the xtrons screen.

9) The hardest part of the installation is cable management. There is enough space behing OEM radio to tuck all the cables behind it (some manipulation may be required). Its hard to show exactly how the cables should be tucked in, but ill do my best to show what should go where

10) Your car may have to operate sound through AUX when replacing the screen, therefore you need to install the AUX cable. The cable can be outside (easy way), or you can try to tuck it in below the center console (hard way)
If you decide to keep it outside, simply plug the AUX cable you got with accessories into "Audio Out" on the xtrons power harness, and plug the other end into AUX of the car (the pocket inside the armrest)
If you decide to hide the AUX cable, you can do so this way:

You will have to remove the idrive panel (held by 4 screws marked red on the pic) to access the cigarette lighter port from the back, here you will be routing the AUX cable through to access AUX port.

On the bottom of above picture there is aux cable. Here is how the AUX is routed through cigarette lighetr port.

The other end of AUX will go under drinks holder, and will come out from underneath the ashtray.
The tricky part is to tuck the AUX cable under the trim, and push it through into the radio console.

11) Remove the plastic trim:

Thsi trim is tricky to take out, and even more tricky to put back in. be careful and do not use excesive force. (Take out video)

12) You may have to shave off a little bot of that trim to let the cable fit through it. See photo below:

13) Route the AUX cable under the trim, and push it through the hole (see pic) so it pops out behind the plastic on the left side (if your car is right hand drive). Use tweezers, or other tool to route the cable further into the back of the console - so it comes out at the back.

Now, plug the AUX cable into the Audio OUT on the xtrons harness.

Once tucked in, you can reinstall the modified plastic trim (Reinstallation Video)

The ashtray wont sit flush unless you shave off some of its plastic.

14) Route the USB cables into the glovebox

15) Now everything should be ready to assemble back. There are few cables that you need to route up, so it reaches new screen. These should be routed rigt between the air vents, behind any pastic trims. It is important that the cables are behind any plastics, otherwise it may be impossibe to reinstall front panels of the console. These are:

Power Cable
OEM LVSD cable
USB Cable
4G antenna
RCA (optional)
GPS antenna or FZMF (Optional)

Once you have the Xtrons power cable plugged between OEM radio and original plug, AUX cable plugged into Audio Out port, and everything routed between vents, you can start putting the OEM radio back in its place.

16) This time push the xtrons power cable behind the radio, and if you check with your hand, you will feel there is little bit more space on the left side on the back of the oem radio hole. Try to tuck the power cable there, along with any other obstruction/extra cables.

17) Secure the OEM radio with 4 screws that you took out before.

18) Take xtrons screen, and plug the power cable, Usb cable, Pink LVSD cable, Gps antenna, and 4G antenna.
19) Slide the xtrons screen in place, and secure the screen with 2 screws:

20) Plug the Climate Control panel back, and clip in into the central console. Secure it with 2 screws

21) Plug the air vent back, and clip it back onto its place.

TIPS:
1) For correct operation of the unit and OEM screen, you need to select the correct settings in factory settings. Go to:
Settings - Factory - 1314 - car display - and select the correct screen (It has to match the system version of your original screen (CIC/CCC/ or NBT and screen size))

2) If you have OEM camera, make sure you select correct camera in settings:
setting - System - Camera selection - OEM Camera

3) If you have bad sound after installation, Restart the unit to factory settings.
